Board Director Branding

BOARD DIRECTOR BRANDING

Landing a board seat is highly competitive and takes time.

How you position and brand yourself for a board search differs from how you do so for a job search.

To stand out from the competition as a new or experienced director, you need a personal brand that communicates the unique value you bring to the boardroom.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      What is board director branding?

      +
Board director branding is thinking about your personal brand in the context of being a board director and how you're perceived by the people who influence decisions about recruiting and selecting board directors — nominating and governance committees, CEOs, current and former directors, search firms and investors. Effective board director branding means being strategic and intentional about how you position yourself and come across to these stakeholders, both in person and online. This matters most when you're actively pursuing a board seat, but it also shapes whether the right people think of you when an opportunity opens up before it's ever posted.

Who is board director branding for?

      +
Board director branding is for senior executives and C-suite leaders pursuing their first board seat, as well as experienced directors who want to sharpen how they're positioned for their next one. It also applies if you're currently serving on advisory boards and want to move toward fiduciary roles. Whether you're early in the process or haven't gotten the traction you expected, the work is the same: get your positioning right, sharpen how you communicate it, and build the visibility and relationships that lead to the right conversations.

What does working with Point Road Group on a board search look like?

      +
Our approach combines personal branding with executive coaching, because clarity and confidence in your board value proposition are just as important as a strong board bio, board resume and LinkedIn profile. We start with coaching to get clear on your target boards, positioning, the specific value you bring as a director and the story you tell about it. From there, we write your board resume, bio and LinkedIn profile, and provide guidance on how to build or enhance the relationships that actually lead to board seats — most of which happen through referral and reputation, not applications. We're not a search firm or placement platform; we prepare you to be a stronger, more visible candidate wherever the opportunity comes from.

Do you write board resumes, bios and LinkedIn profiles?

      +
Yes, we write them from scratch through a thoughtful, iterative process that has driven client success for over 15 years. We start with a conversation, delving deep into your background and experience, asking probing questions to pull out what's most relevant to the boards you're targeting — richer information than an existing resume or LinkedIn profile alone can capture. We draft, share for feedback, and continue that process until we have a great final version, with no limit on drafts or time spent, because the goal is the best possible materials for what you want to do next.

Can you help me if I don't have formal board experience yet?

      +
Time depends on three factors: which program you select (coaching time varies, sometimes extending several months); your availability (if you're traveling or have heavy work commitments, meetings may be scheduled several weeks apart); and your response time to material drafts (the quicker you respond with feedback, the quicker we move to the next round and ultimately the final version). Typical engagement time ranges from six weeks to four months.

How long does a full board search typically take, once I'm ready?

      +
This is separate from how long our engagement takes — it's about how you put yourself out there (where you network, how often, do you follow up and stay in touch etc.), what you specifically bring to the table as a director, the market and other factors. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint.

      What is the cost?

      +
We charge a flat fee that reflects our comprehensive coaching and personal branding process, including all meetings, writing/editing, research/prep and all phone and email communication between meetings. Pricing depends on the size and scope of the engagement; coaching time varies by program. Contact us so we can learn more about you, your goals and where you're starting from, and recommend the right program to get you board-ready.

      How do I get started?

      +
Schedule a discovery call. We'll talk through your background, your board goals and where you're starting from, and outline what a program built around your situation would look like.
